Comparison

AI visibility, AEO and LLM SEO tools: an honest comparison.

Eleven tools that measure whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and the rest name your product. Sold as AI visibility tools, AEO tools, GEO tools or LLM SEO tools; it is one category. Compared on the engines they cover, whether they separate branded from unbranded prompts, citation sources, trend, and published price. Plus the one number most dashboards hide, and a ten-minute test that exposes it.

TL;DR

  • Only three of the eleven tools state on their own site that they separate branded from unbranded prompts: Peec AI, Otterly.AI, and the open-source scorer. The rest may do it, but they do not say so.
  • Eight of eleven report citation sources, which is the part you can act on. Two do not state it.
  • Published prices run from free to $295 a month; four vendors publish no figure at all.
  • Before you pay for any of them, run five unbranded prompts by hand. If the tool's score and your five answers disagree, believe the answers.

Four names, one category

Vendors sell the same product under four labels. An AI visibility tool, an AEO tool (answer engine optimization), a GEO tool (generative engine optimization) and an LLM SEO tool all do one job: ask the engines a fixed set of questions on a schedule, record who gets named and which pages get cited, and chart it. The label tells you which crowd the vendor is selling to, not what the software does.

The names that matter are the columns in the table below. Does it cover the engines your buyers use. Does it separate the prompts that contain your name from the prompts that do not. Does it show the sources the engine pulled from. Does it publish a price. Judge on those four and ignore the acronym on the pricing page.

The number most dashboards hide

Ask a model "tell me about Acme" and it will tell you about Acme. That is recall, and almost every brand scores near 100% on it. Ask "what should a 50-person SaaS company use for X" and the model has to choose. That is discovery, and it is the only number that describes buyers who have never heard of you.

Most dashboards run both kinds of prompt and report one blended score. The blend averages a solved problem into an unsolved one. A brand at 100% recall and 0% discovery shows up as "50% visible," which sounds like a marketing problem when it is a distribution problem. The methodology behind this page, with the four numbers a report should show, is in Your AI visibility number is lying to you.

One first-party example. On 10 September 2026, GTM Labs ran its own scorer on three unbranded buyer categories it sells into. Organic score on each: 0 of 10 answers. Branded recall on each: 5 of 5. A blended score would have reported 50% and a healthy trend. The honest read is that the engines know the name and never reach for it, and the citation lists said where they reach instead: linkedin.com was cited in all three categories. That is the gap this page is built to expose, and the reason the comparison table has a column for it.

The comparison

Every cell was read from the vendor's own site on 16 September 2026, the LLMrefs row on 23 September. "Not stated on site" means the page did not say, which is a finding in itself. Prices are as published; where a vendor lists tiers without figures, it says on request.

Which one, for whom

  • You want the split and a low bill: Otterly.AI from $29 a month has Branded and Non-Branded filters on the dashboard. Peec AI classifies every prompt but does not publish its figures.
  • You already pay Ahrefs: Brand Radar at $50 a month for custom prompts is the cheapest way to add the metric to a stack you have, and the 456M-prompt index is useful context even if the split is not stated.
  • You want the widest engine list at a published price: Athena, 11+ engines, $295 a month or $252 on annual.
  • You are enterprise and procurement asks about SSO: Profound or Scrunch. Both put citations at the center and both price on request.
  • You want the number before you buy anything: the open-source scorer, or the free AI Visibility Checker. Either will tell you in an afternoon whether you have a discovery problem at all.

How to test any tool in ten minutes

  1. Write five questions a buyer in your category would ask an assistant. None of them may contain your name or a competitor's name. "What is the best way to track Meta conversions on Shopify in 2026" qualifies. "Is Acme good" does not.
  2. Paste each into ChatGPT with search on, and into Perplexity. Ten answers total.
  3. Count the answers that name you. Count the ones that cite a page of yours. Write down every domain the answers cite.
  4. Open the tool's dashboard for the same week. If it says 60% and your ten answers said zero, the 60% is recall wearing a costume.
  5. Look for your ten cited domains in the tool's source report. If they are there, the tool sees what you see. If the report only shows your own score, you bought a thermometer that reads your temperature and nobody else's.

The scorer automates exactly this: it generates the unbranded questions, runs them per engine, and prints the organic share, the branded recall, who was named instead, and the supply chain, on four separate lines. It is on GitHub, MIT licensed, and a run costs cents.

FAQ

What is an AI visibility tool?

Software that asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and similar engines a set of questions on a schedule, records whether your brand is named or your pages are cited, and reports the result as a score, a trend, and a list of the sources the engines used. The good ones separate questions that contain your name from questions that do not.

Do these tools track ChatGPT?

Every tool on this page covers ChatGPT. Coverage of Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Claude, Copilot, Grok and DeepSeek varies, and the counts in vendor copy ('11+ models') matter less than whether the engines your buyers use are in the list. For most B2B categories that means ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI surfaces.

What is a good AI visibility score?

There is no benchmark, because scores are not comparable across tools or even across engines inside one tool. The number worth tracking is organic citation share on unbranded buyer questions, per engine. On a 10-prompt set in a competitive category, going from 0 to 3 named answers on Perplexity in a quarter is real movement. A blended 80% that includes branded prompts tells you the engine can repeat your name.

Why does branded versus unbranded matter so much?

A branded prompt hands the model your name. Nearly every brand scores near 100% on those, because the model is recalling, not recommending. Unbranded prompts ('best X for Y') are the only ones where the engine has to choose you, and that is where buyers who have never heard of you live. Blending the two averages a solved problem into an unsolved one and hides the gap.

Is there a free way to measure AI visibility?

Yes. The open-source ai-visibility-scorer runs on your machine with an OpenRouter key and costs cents per run. Athena has a free tier, Profound has a 10-prompt trial, and Otterly and Searchable offer trials. The free GTM Labs checker gives a one-shot read of the organic number without setup.

How often should I measure?

Monthly on a fixed prompt set, and again the week after you ship a fix. Answers vary run to run, so a single reading is a data point, not a verdict. Daily dashboards are fine for alerts but the trend that matters is month over month on the same prompts.

Do the tools tell me why a competitor is cited instead of me?

The ones with citation source reporting do, indirectly: they show the domains the engine pulled from, which is usually a review site, a listicle, a Reddit thread, or LinkedIn rather than the competitor's own site. That list is the work. A tool that reports only your score and not the sources leaves you with a number and no next step.

Is an AEO tool the same as a GEO tool?

Yes, in practice. Answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization describe the same work: getting named and cited in AI answers. The tools that carry either label run scheduled prompts against the engines, log mentions and citations, and chart them. Some vendors use AEO for Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode and GEO for ChatGPT and Perplexity, but no tool on this page limits itself to one side of that line.

What is an LLM SEO tool?

A third name for the same category, used by vendors selling to SEO teams. LLM SEO tools track whether large language models name you and which URLs they cite, the same data an AI visibility tool reports. If a vendor claims its LLM SEO tool does something an AI visibility tool cannot, ask which column in the comparison it would change.

Which of these is the best AI visibility tool?

There is no single answer, because they price and cover differently. On published price with the branded split built in, Otterly.AI. On engine coverage at a published price, Athena or LLMrefs. For enterprise procurement, Profound or Scrunch. For the number before you spend anything, the open-source scorer. Run the ten-minute test on this page against any two of them and pick the one whose score matches your own ten answers.

Do these tools track llms.txt, and does the file matter?

Some report whether you have one. It does not appear to move citations. Ahrefs analysed 137,000 domains and found 97% of llms.txt files received zero requests in a month, and most of the requests that did arrive came from bots. Structure your pages for extraction and earn third-party mentions instead.

llms.txt figure: Ahrefs, 137,000 domains, May 2026.

Measured, then fixed

A tool tells you the number. The pilot moves it.

Week one of the Growth Pilot baselines you on unbranded prompts across four engines. An experiment card then fixes the pages that get extracted, and the Friday review reads the same number again. $5,000 fixed, four weeks.
