AI Overviews Tracker
Google answers the query before the ten blue links now, and it cites a handful of pages while it does it. Enter your domain and up to five keywords. You get, per query: overview or no overview, who it cited, whether that includes you, and where you rank organically. Then the list of every domain cited, which is where the work is.

Google AI Overview tracking, without the dashboard
Most AI visibility tools sell Google AI Overview tracking as a line item on a monthly plan. The mechanism underneath is simple: load the result page, find the overview block, read its references. This page does that for five keywords at a time and shows you the raw citations instead of a blended score.
Two numbers come out that people tend to conflate. Your organic rank is where your page sits in the ten links. Your citation is whether the overview above those links pulled from your page. They diverge often. A page can rank third and never be cited because Google could not lift a clean answer out of it, and a page outside the top ten can be cited because it had a definition, a table, or a sourced claim exactly where the overview needed one.
How the read works
- One live Google search per keyword: United States, English, desktop, top ten organic results, with the AI Overview loaded.
- If an overview block is present, we collect every reference it exposes, at the block level and inside each of its elements, and reduce them to domains.
- Your domain counts as cited when a reference host equals it or is a subdomain of it. www is ignored.
- Your organic rank is the best position your domain holds in the top ten, or none.
- The supply chain is every cited domain across all overviews in the run, counted.
What it will not tell you
Whether the overview will look the same tomorrow, on mobile, or from London. Whether the click went to you or stayed on the page. Whether the citation moved revenue. For that last one there is the Growth Pilot: an experiment card with a baseline, a metric and a stop date, decided every Friday. The method is on the AI search visibility page. On the open-source Kubernetes UI in this case, the July channel read showed Google, not Reddit, was the largest source of people, which is why the overview citations were worth chasing at all.
FAQ
What is an AI Overviews tracker?
A tool that checks, for a set of Google queries, whether Google shows an AI Overview at the top of the results, which pages that overview cites, and whether your domain is one of them. This one reads the live US desktop result page for each keyword you enter and reports citations per query plus the domains cited across all of them.
Why does citation in an AI Overview matter if I already rank?
Because they are different mechanisms. Google builds the overview from pages it can extract a clean answer from, and it cites those, which is why a page ranking third can go uncited while a page from position twelve gets a link in the overview. On an open-source Kubernetes UI we worked on in 2026, Google, not Reddit, turned out to be the largest source of people, and the overview citations were part of that.
Does every query trigger an AI Overview?
No. Google shows overviews on some informational and comparison queries and not on others, and the set changes over time. The tracker reports the queries where no overview appeared so you can see the split, and it counts citations only across the overviews that did appear.
How is this different from the AI Visibility Checker?
The checker asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity unbranded buyer questions and counts whether they name you. This tracker reads Google's own result page for your exact keywords and reports what Google's overview cited. Use both: one for the answer engines, one for the search engine that still sends most of the people.
Where does the data come from?
A live Google search per keyword through a SERP data provider, US location, English, desktop, with the AI Overview loaded. Each run is a snapshot of that moment. We do not store your keywords or results.
How many keywords should I track, and how often?
Five per run is the cap here. Pick the queries a buyer types before they know your name: the category, the comparison, the migration. Run the same five monthly and keep the numbers in a sheet. One run is a data point; the trend is the signal.
What do I do if a rival is cited and I am not?
Open the cited page and look at why Google could extract an answer from it: a direct definition, a comparison table, sourced claims, structured data. Then build the page that answers the same query better on your domain, and earn a mention on the third-party pages in the supply-chain list. That is one experiment card in a Growth Pilot, in one paragraph.
